Thirty-one year old steel worker Richard Webb,is flying off on an all expenses paid trip to Las Vegas to play in the final of the world’s largest pub poker competition, after beating more than the odds in a poker league at theKing’s Head at Bridgend.

Richard is one of one hundred finalists to be competing, courtesy of Redtooth poker, for the ‘Pub Poker Champion 2017’ crown, £5,000 in prize money and £10,000 worth of sponsorship, when they fly out for a week on 25thMay.

The Kings Head poker league sent their top four players to the 125 player regional final in Cardiff where Richard earned his place at one of the 155 player strong national finals in Luton where after ten hours, he won a ‘golden ticket’ to Las Vegas after finishing in the top five.

“The games were streamed live on Facebook,” said Richard, “I knew all my fellow league players, friends and my finance xxxxxx were watching and they said my face was an absolute picture when I realised the game had stopped because we’d got down to the top five.

“By the time I got home, I’d be on the go for twenty hours but I can still remember how absolutely buzzing I was!”

To reach the final definitely was against the odds with Richard having to juggle shifts at Port Talbot, meaning he missed a significant number of games, and forfeited valuable league points. So has this boosted Richard’s confidence?

“Well I never thought I’d get the chance to be in this position that is for sure! I’ve come this far and proved myself so if the cards are right on the day, you never know!” added Richard.

“I am optimistic but if I don’t win, I won’t be upset about it because I’m flying my fiancé out and if we leave the tournament, we can enjoy the delights of Las Vegas and the Nevada dessert.”

The competition is the sixth annual Las Vegas trip and runs from 25thMay to 2ndJune 2017, culminating from 50,000 Redtooth poker nights, 72 regional finals and various national events. It is the largest pub poker league in the world with 180,000 registered players. The winner takes £5,000 in prize money with the remaining top twenty sharing a further £7,000.
