Anyone touched in some way by a Macmillan nurse wants to give back – and that’s exactly what the Fiddlers pub in Cleethorpes has done raising enough cash to fund a nurse for a whole year.

Three years of fundraising by landlord George Campbell started the fund off at £21,000 at his last pub before a further £2,500 was added this weekend with a huge effort including a ‘brave the shave;’ night of live music; tombola; and a sponsored walk.

George and fellow organisers, locals, Barry Beaumont and Marc Harrand will hand the £2,500 cheque over to Macmillan at a presentation event next week, both having huge affection for the charity who has personally helped them– George through his mother and Barry himself as a cancer sufferer.

The vibrant evening saw local bands donate their time for free: Decoy; The Word; Yaz Band and Phil Stocks, with the 450 guests paying £2 to attend the event, all proceeds donated to Macmillan.

DJ Steve later pumped up the volume on the DJ decks with Terry Furry lighting up the event.

Beautiful blonde haired Katie Brabben ‘braved the shave’ waving goodbye to her golden locks to raise an outstanding £30. A raffle followed with generously donated prizes ranging from champagne to a signed Grimsby shirt and everything in between.

Sponsored walkers Andy Wade and Bob Briggs also arrived part way through proceedings, happy to sink a beer after their treacherous walk to Tetney and back.

George, Barry and Marc were keen to impress that Macmillan nurse service are not just about palliative care but also help people to survive: “Cancer sufferers get practical support from new clothes after significant weight loss to transport helping them stay in work; all aspects that preserve the self respect of a patient,” said George.

“Macmillan also provide a great support system for others affected by the cruel disease, which is why the charity are so deserving of our funds.”
