The team at the Slug and Lettuce in Kingston are appealing for the loan of gym equipment for their charity fundraising week which has been inspired by the forthcoming Olympic Games.

Starting on Monday 23rd July, the week before London 2012, the team are pledging to raise money for Access Sport, a charity whose mission is to give more children, particularly those in disadvantaged areas, access to a wide range of quality local sport. This is achieved through empowering the inspirational community volunteers who set up and run local sports clubs with cash, expert advice and networking to help create thriving clubs which get people positively engaged.

Alicx Livingstone, Assistant Manager of the Slug and Lettuce in Kingston explains: “With all of the excitement around the Olympic Games, we wanted to create a charity event that would tap into that and Access Sport really does help transform young people’s lives through sport. We would like to appeal to gyms, sports centre and shops that sell gym equipment to loan us a rowing machine and a cycling machine for our fundraising week. We have already approached a few companies and organisations but have yet to hear back from them.

“To raise money for Access Sport we are going to ask customers to donate £1 where they can try their hand at getting as close as possible to the current world record of a 500m cycle sprint. Or, if that’s a bit strenuous then they can attempt the non-world record time trial of 1000m rowing. All of the proceeds will go directly to Access Sport. At the end of the week, the customers that have got closest to the time will be awarded a prize for all their hard work and effort!”
