It started with a conversation amongst team members and ended with an incredible fundraising night in honour of local little one, two-year-old Ava Rose, who suffers from cystic fibrosis.

The Silkworm in Sudbury is celebrating the success of its ‘Wish upon a star’ campaign, which raised nearly £1,800 for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Led by deputy manager, Cat Barrett and Ava’s mother, Emily Wicks, the team at the pub have worked tirelessly to raise awareness and funds for the charity.

A heap of activity has taken place over the past few weeks, centred around the starry theme including a sky of stars in the pub, where anyone who wanted could place a wish on a paper star and hang it above the bar top in exchange for a donation.

The campaign finished off with a bright and glittery 80s / 90s themed event, held on Friday 19th February. Over 400 local residents popped by to show their support and join in on the entertainment, which included fancy dress, neon face-painting, a frame photo booth, beer pong games, a prize raffle and even a quick visit from Ava herself, daughter of one of the team members.

Cat said: “We were astonished by the incredible support we received from the community. Lots of people contacted us to take part and help us raise money, and some of our local businesses donated prizes for the raffle. It’s been a real community effort. The visit from little Ava was the highlight of the evening – she is a shining star and a reminder of how important it is that we work together to fight against diseases like cystic fibrosis. I’m so proud of the team, they’ve really put their heart and soul into this campaign – we’re already planning our next event!”

A cheque handover will take place on Thursday 31st March at The Silkworm between 11am – 11.30am and a representative from the Cystic Fibrosis Trust will be present, as will Ava and her mother Emily.
