Tina Hunt, licensee of the Harrow in Cheam will be hosting a week of events to celebrate St. George’s Day on Monday 23rd April. The pub, which is asking its customers to award themselves a CBE (Celebrate Being English) will also be hosting a variety of fundraising initiatives over the week in a bid to raise £3000 for the armed forces charity, Help for Heroes.

Speaking about the week’s activity, Tina said: “CBE – Celebrate Being English came about when the team and I were planning our celebrations for St. Patrick’s Day. Pubs and bars always go all out to make sure St Patrick’s Day is a fun day for customers, so we decided to put all of our efforts into creating a St. George’s week celebration that people will remember. It’s just a bit of fun to help raise money for a charity that touches so many people’s lives. I have friends that are out serving in Afghanistan so I try to do whatever I can to help raise money for Help for Heroes.

“The local businesses have been fantastic with their support, so all we need now is the support from our local community. We’ve organised a range of activity that will bring a smile to people’s faces as well as raising a significant amount of money for Help for Heroes. Any donation, big or small, will go towards helping members of the armed forces who are putting their lives on the line.”

The fun starts on Monday 23rd April where the Harrow will be offering a selection of English real ales at £2.49, so dust down those tankards and take out the Toby Jug and raise a glass to the saint who slayed dragons! Tuesday is the quiz night which will have an English theme; customers can take part for just £1 with all the proceeds going to Help for Heroes. The pub’s team will also be getting into the spirit of things by digging deep into their wardrobes as they dress in English themed costumes.

Wednesday sees a silent auction with local businesses including Kudos, Molyneux, Dorking Brewery and Hammerpot Brewery generously donating lots. Thursday is Rock n Roll Bingo – like bingo you have to get a full house but instead of crossing off numbers, you have to cross off song titles as they are played in the pub. Like the quiz, its £1 to enter with proceeds going to Help for Heroes.

The week of activity then draws to a spectacular close with activities for all the family; colouring in competitions, face painting and bouncy horsey hoppers (like space hoppers but with a modern day twist). The Harrow will also be asking customers to pay the price of their children’s meals directly to the charity’s funds instead of paying the pub who will absorb the costs. The Harrow will be selling merchandise from the charity such as wristbands as well as placing collection tins and boxes around the pub.
