The Leaping Salmon pub is proving its deserved pride of place on the River Tweed as Berwick-Upon-Tweed’s Lord Mayor toasted the much-anticipated £300,000 transformation by new owners on Friday 28thApril at a celebratory VIP event.

The overwhelming reception of Berwick to the newly refurbished pub on the opening weekend brought customers in their droves, making it the pub’s busiest Easter with it’s crowd pleasing menu, expansive ales, and 241 cocktails, flying out during the four day break.

There was even an unexpected but much welcome guest visit by silver fox TV presenter Philip Schofield.

A far cry from its old format, the refreshed, softer setting with brand new amenities has huge appeal to a broad section of locals as well as to its seasonal trade with walls adorned by pictures and bric-a-brac synonymous with the proud history of the town.

New manager Steve Foster commented: “The Leaping Salmon has been everything from a grammar school dating back to 1952 to the much loved local of salmon farmers. Being grade II listed we wanted to maintain the heritage whilst offering an amenity modern pub goers deserve.”

Investment extends to Sky and BT sports aired across seven HD screens with the piece de resistance, five pre-bookable booths complete with screens and table service. The first to be aired Newcastle game saw fans queuing at the door and the Anthony Joshua vs Wladimir Klitscho fight on Saturday 29thApril was equally standing room only.

The expansion of cask ales wascelebrated bythe Lord Mayor when he pulled the first pint at the VIP event before joining other guests for bubbles and menu tasters and to commend the investment and creation of eight new jobs in the newly refurbished conservatory.

An extensive menu of over 100 combinations of dishes from salads, to traditional favourites, burgers, sharers and daily offers gears the Leaping Salmon up for ramblers, tourists and locals to descend in the warmer months. An everyday lunch and drink deal is available for £5.99, and there are 2 meals for £9.99 all day every day. Daily value offers Big Burger Bar Tuesday £5.49 to Saturday 5-dish Pick ‘n’ Mix Planks for £8.99.

Driving a family friendly reputation the pub has introduced a brand new kids menu as well as the timeless entertainment of colouring to keep the little ones occupied. There are also plans for bingo, quizzes, and games nights.

Cask Tuesdays offers pints from £1.85 and the traditional Sunday roast is well and truly back.

Stonegate Pub Company bought the Leaping Salmon from JD Wetherspoon in 2016.
