Cheltenham’s bustling Regent Street welcomed the stylish ‘Whittle Taps’ on Friday 2nd December when the new premium pub reopened just in time for the festive season following a £250,000 development.
With a nod of respect to the man who crafted the first jet engine in a Cheltenham garage, the new concept standing in place of the previous Slug andamp; Lettuce, boasts craft itself with a neon lit shrine to the craft beer revolution; hand-crafted artisan pizzas; and a team who mix the best porn star martinis dawn ‘til dusk.
The new menu boasts ten hand stretched stone baked pizzas, a combination of tapas – the ultimate socialising food as well as a few pub favourites like beef and ale pie and Burgers with their own recipe beef patties.
New manager Joel Moniz, a steadfast expert of craft beer, local breweries and the launch of niche pubs himself, explains the unique offer and its ‘wow’ factor. “Cheltenham has some amazing and quirky bars but none as diverse as what the Whittle Taps will be.
“Customers can join us for breakfast, roll into a quick lunchtime bite of salad and lighter dishes; chill out with 2-4-1 cocktails 5-8pm before a dinner of tapas or stonebaked pizzas; and then party into the evening. We’ve filled a gap to fulfil what modern, sociable pub goers demand without friends contending over which venue!
The décor and theme suitably pays homage to the Sir Frank Whittle heritage, whilst oozing sophistication, and a blend of artisan and stylish warmth directed at chic entrepreneurs, trendsetters and aspiring hipsters.
The opening event at 5pm showcased the pub’s four local ales, and six craft beers and cider including Camden Hells, Meantime London Pale Ale and Joel’s personal favourite Thornbridge’s Purity Longhorn. ‘Seven Deadly’ gins, premium botanical blends exquisitely garnished to heighten the flavour, menu tasters and prosecco are also promised before a duo from local band the ‘Chip Shop Boys’ show how carefully selected music will make the new pub renowned for its late night atmosphere.
Sticking to the theme of ‘turbo’, the significant investment has also created seven new jobs whilst doubling the pub’s capacity. There’s a whole range of incentives for customers with a selection of offers starting with Crafty Monday; Tapas Tuesday; Wing Wednesday; 241 Pizza Thursday; and Fizz andamp; Chips Fridays.
